Termination periods for business energy contracts

Termination periods for business

What is a rollover contract?

In the UK, switching your business energy supplier is tricky.

Business tariffs are fixed for at least 12 months and you are bound to the contract until it expires. What’s more is that once your initial contract comes to an end, your supplier will automatically extend it for another 12 months at an increased rate. This is often known as a contract rollover. In order to avoid a rollover, you need to notify your supplier in writing of your wish to terminate your contract well in advance of the initial contract’s end date.

Switching energy suppliers for small businesses

If you run a small or micro business, employing 10 people or fewer, your energy supplier has a legal obligation to send you a renewal letter 90 days before the contract end date, giving you time to shop around for a better deal. However, if your business has more than 10 employees, no such obligation exists, leaving it completely down to you to contact your supplier and terminate the contract before it’s too late.

Terminating a business energy contract

If you do terminate your contract with your existing supplier, it is crucial you ensure you have a new supplier to take its place, starting from the contract end date. If you fail to sign an agreement with a new supplier during this time, you will be placed on very expensive ‘out of contract’ rates by your existing supplier.

How to avoid rollover contracts

With all this in mind, below is a list of the minimum termination periods for the Big Six energy providers. We have also included the postal and email addresses to which you should send your termination notice. You can even fill out these template notice letters to terminate your business' elecricity and gas contracts.

Make sure you send your notice before the end of your termination period!
